The opera house is home to both the Norwegian National Opera and the Norwegian Ballet.

2. Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen is one of the world’s most famous ski jump arenas and easily Oslo’s foremost attraction. The arena was originally built at the end of the 19th century, and renovated extensively in 1952 for the Winter Olympic Games. Holmenkollen is situated 357 meters (1,000 feet) above sea level, and the ski jump tower, which is one of the principal attractions here, is another 60 meters (180 feet) higher, with spectacular all-around views from the top. There is also a ski museum here, the oldest in the world, devoted to the history of skiing which goes back some 4,000 years! Holmokollen is in the Marka region of Oslo, and open to the public year-round.

3. Vigeland Sculpture Park

Located within the larger Frogner Park in the western section of Oslo, Vigeland Park is noted for its wealth of granite and bronze sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, one of Norway’s most famous sculptors, for whom the park is named. There are more than 200 Vigeland sculptures here, and there is also a museum with Vigeland’s work located just across from the park, open to the public Tuesday to Sunday year-round. The park is open to the public 24 hours, all year.

4. Oseberg Viking Ship Museum

One of the most popular museums in the city, the Oseberg Viking Ship Museum houses three of the world’s best-preserved Viking ships. The ships are more than 1,100 years old and were found nearly a century ago in Oseberg, which is near Oslo, in the county of Vestfold. The museum also has exhibits demonstrating fabric and weaving techniques from the Viking era, as well as an assortment of tools and weapons. The museum is open daily.

5. National Museum of Art

Oslo’s National Museum of Art is home to the world’s most recognized painting, Edvard Munch’s Skrik, also known as The Scream. Besides this 1893 masterpiece, the museum houses extensive collections of both Norwegian and International art. The museum is located next to the Oslo University on Universtetsgaten, just a couple of blocks from Oslo’s main thoroughfare, Karl Johan. Admission to the museum is free.

6. Munch Museum

Here is a museum entirely devoted to Norway’s most famous artist, Edvard Munch, one of the pioneers of Expressionism and painter of the renowned Skrik (The Scream). The museum has two versions of The Scream, one each in pastels and oil, the latter dating from 1910. The museum, which is probably a 10-minute walk from Karl Johan, has literally hundreds of Munch’s paintings, donated by the artist to the city. The Munch Museum is open daily, except on Mondays.

7. Akershus Fortress

The Akershus Fortress, or Akershus Castle, situated in the southeastern part of the city center, is an integral part of Oslo’s history. It was originally built as a royal residence in the 14th century by King Hakon V, when Oslo first became the capital of Norway, and rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the early 17th century by King Christian IV, following a fire that consumed the entire city. Today, you can tour both parts of Akershus: Akershus Slottet, which is the castle itself, and Akershus Festning, the area surrounding the castle. Akershus Festning is open all year between 6am and 9pm, while Akershus Slottet, the castle, is open to the public only during summer, unless you take a guided tour, which is available on Thursdays, even during off-peak season.

8. Oslo City Hall

Oslo’s City Hall has a claim to fame. This is where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded every year on December 10, the only Nobel Prize to be presented outside Nobel’s home country of Sweden. This is also the seat of Oslo’s city council. The city hall building itself, which was inaugurated in 1950, is not terribly inspiring from the exterior, but has an impressive interior and a stunning view of the harbor. The city hall is located on Fridtjof Nansens Plass and is open on weekdays during business hours.

9. Oslo Parliament

Oslo’s Parliament Building, Stortinget, is also worth seeing, especially if you are visiting Oslo for the first time. Uniquely 19th-century neo-Romanesque, the building dates from 1866 and was designed by Swedish architect Emil Victor Langle. Stortinget is located in the center of Karl Johansgate, just past the intersection of Akersgate. Admission is free, with scheduled guided tours available year-round.

10. Royal Palace

Although not as well known as British royalty, Norway still has its kings and queens and this is where they reside. The Royal Palace, or ‘slottet’, was originally built in 1824 as the residence of the Norwegian-cum-Swedish king, Charles III, and extensively renovated and restored to its former glory in the 1990s, at a significant cost, by King Harald V, the current monarch. The palace, situated on a small rise at the end of Karl Johansgate, Oslo’s principal artery, is open for public tours during the summer months, June-August.

Kitzbuhel, Austria, for our American friends, is the Vail or Aspen of Europe, but with a twist. Situated in the Austrian Alps, it is at once a pricey ski resort town and an old, medieval hamlet with a fairytale charm and cobblestone alleys lined with brightly painted storefronts and trendy little boutiques and cafes, where the promenading crowd dons furs rather than ski wear. It is a place, particularly its walled town center, that lends itself to walking around and lingering, soaking up an ambiance that is both quaint and upscale.

But if you are visiting Kitzbuhel for the first time and wish to take in the sights, here are the city’s ‘Top 7′ attractions.

1. Bergahnmuseum

The Bergahnmuseum, or the cable car museum, is located at the world-famous 2 mile-long (3.5 km) Hahnenkamm Ski Run in Kitzbuhel, on the top station of the gondola lift. It has exhibits documenting the history and technology of ski lift construction. For ski buffs, the museum also offers a simulated run down the Streif ski racecourse. The museum is open daily.

2. Heimatmuseum

The most interesting thing about the Heimatmuseum is that it is housed in the city’s oldest structure, a restored 13th-century home. The museum is devoted to the history of Kitzbuhel and has displays of old photographs, mining tools and other artifacts. Museum admission is 6.50 euros each, and the museum is open daily except Sunday.

3. Bauernhausmuseum (Hinterobernau)

Bauernhausmuseum, also known as the Hinterobernau Farmhouse Museum, is located just to the north of town on Romerweg. It offers visitors a peek at a traditional 16th-century farmhouse, fully furnished and equipped, just as it would have been 400 years ago. The museum is open daily from June to September, and by appointment during winter.

4. Pfarrkirche

Pfarrkirche, situated on a knoll just north of the town center, is a delightful 15th century church. It’s well worth a visit, if only to see its Baroque interior. The church is open daily.

5. Wildpark Tirol

Wildpark Tirol, a wildlife park of sorts, is situated along the road to the Jochberg Tor, just 4 km (2.5 miles) outside the Kitzbuhel city limits. The centerpiece of the park is a walking trail that winds its way through enclosures of yaks, lynx, deer, boars, ibex, marmots, ducks and other birds and beasts. The park is open year-round.

6. St. Johann

A bustling yet charming Tyrolean village in a stunning alpine setting, St. Johann is situated just around the Kitzbuhelerhorn Mountain from Kitzbuhel. The chief attractions here are the lovely, two-towered, onion-domed parish church, Maria Himmelfahrt, that dates from 1723; the village’s tiny market square dominated by a wall of frescoed houses; and the ski area where the main lift, the Harschbichl gondola, climbs the mountain from a St. Johann residential area.

7. Soll

The Tyrolean village of Soll, also a stone’s throw from Kitzbuhel, offers a worthwhile detour. The village clusters around its Rococo-style 1765 landmark church, perched on a hill in the center of town, overlooking a lively pedestrian area with shops and restaurants. Soll’s principal draws, however, are its labyrinth of walking trails, more than 700 kilometers of them, and SkiWelt, Austria’s largest interconnected ski area, with 250 km of groomed runs and 93 lifts. Another highlight here is a walk through Hexenwald, or Witch’s Forest, and up the mountain to the summit of Hohe Salve, where you can visit Salven Chapel, the highest chapel in Austria at 1829 meters, and also enjoy panoramic views of 70 alpine peaks.

To add to that, the urban part of the city is more than 750 years old, filled with well-preserved historic buildings in equally delightful neighborhoods.

So, what should one see when one visits Stockholm, you might ask. Well, here are the city’s ‘Top 10′ attractions.

1. Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan, or Old Town, ought to be at the top of your list. This is a place of Old World charm, with brightly painted buildings and medieval streets, which in the mid-13th century constituted the entire city of Stockholm. And since Gamla Stan is all about atmosphere, walking around is the best way to soak it up. The main street of interest here is Vasterlanggatan, liberally punctuated with shops and restaurants. Besides which, several ‘must-see’ attractions of the city are also to be found here, including the Royal Palace, the Parliament building, and Stortorget, the main square in the old town center, where all those picturesque, colorful houses are located.

2. Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace)

Kungliga Slottet, one of Stockholm’s two royal palaces, is situated at the northeastern end of Gamla Stan, the Old Town. The more-or-less square palace, built in 1754, boasts no fewer than 608 rooms! Yet, this is not where the Swedish royalty resides: this is the palace set aside for the king and queen’s offices and used primarily for royal meetings. But still, since it’s open to the public, include this on your itinerary, especially if you’re partial to lavish interiors.

3. Riksdag (Parliament)

The Sveriges Riksdag, Sweden’s parliament, where its 349-member legislative body deliberates, is also worth seeing. Located on Helgeandsholmen island, between Gamla Stan and Norrmalm, the Riksdag complex consists of a series of architecturally interesting buildings, among them Rosebad – where the government is housed – Mercurius, Neptunus, Cephalus, the Members’ Building, and the East and West wings of the Riksdag. The oldest of these, Neptunus and Cephalus, have portions dating from the 17th century; and in the main legislative chamber, the regal Grand Stairway holds particular interest. There is a 500-seat public viewing gallery at the Riksdag, and scheduled, guided tours are offered year-round. There is no admission charge.

4. Storkyrkan (Cathedral)

Storkyrkan, or the cathedral, or great church, is located next to Kungliga Slottet, the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan. This is where monarchs were crowned. In the interior of this 14th-century building, you can view a Gothic sculpture of St. George slaying the mythical dragon. The cathedral is open daily, and is a freebee to boot.

5. Marten Trotzigs Grand

Here is one of the city’s more unusual attractions. To get there, take any of the streets heading to the southern end of Stadsholmen, such as Prastgatan, which runs parallel to the shopping street Vasterlanggatan, and look for Marten Trotzigs Grand on your right. This is the narrowest street in the city, in some places no more than 90 cm (3 feet) wide! The alley emerges on Jarntorget, or Iron Square, which got its name during the Middle Ages, when iron trading was the dominant business in Stockholm.

6. Sergels Torg

Sergels Torg, or Sergels Square, lies at the very heart of modern Stockholm, on Sodermalm island. This is the new city center, a rectangular black-and-white plaza dominated by the glass cultural center, Kulturhuset, where scores of works of art draw the public’s attention from behind a see-through facade. The prominent fountain at the center of the plaza, a 37-meter-high glass obelisk, is the ‘Kristall’, completed in 1974.

7. Stadshuset (City Hall)

Stadshuset, Stockholm’s City Hall, is an architectural delight with a stately bell tower, 106 meters (300 feet) high, situated on the eastern point of Kungsholmen, the island to the west of the city center. It is perhaps Stockholm’s most prominent landmark, with one of the best views of the city. It is also, equally famously, the home of the Nobel Prize where, in the impressive Bia Hallen, the awards ceremonies are held every year in December. Guided tours are offered year-round, two daily during winter, and hourly during summer.

8. Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum is built around a 17th-century warship, the ‘Vasa’, which sank off the southern tip of Djurgarden on its maiden voyage in 1628. The ship broke surface 333 years later, in 1961, remarkably well preserved. The ‘Vasa’ is 69 meters long and 11.7 meters wide, with a 19-meter mast and 64 guns on board. Two other ships at the museum are the icebreaker ‘Sankt Erik’ and a lightship ‘Finngrundet’, dating from 1915 and 1903, respectively. The museum is open to the public daily.

9. Ostermalm

For a taste of upper-crust Stockholm, wander over to Ostermalm, the district to the east of Norrmalm and northeast of Sodermalm, where the streets are lined with expensive apartments, shops and restaurants. The ‘crustiest’ or most expensive of them all are on Strandvagen, singularly Stockholm’s most expensive residential neighborhood, at the southern end of Ostermalm.

10. Drottningholm (Royal Palace)

Drottningholm is the other Royal Palace, the actual residence of the royal family. It is located on Lovon island, some 10 km outside the city, reached either by land – car or tour bus – or by ferry, which leaves from the bridge by Stadshuset every hour. Built in the French Baroque style, around the same time as France’s Versailles, and frequently referred to as the ‘Nordic Versailles’, the palace displays a 17th-century opulence that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere in Northern Europe. Guided and self-guided tours of the palace and its grounds take in Queen Hedwig Eleonora’s decadent bedroom which took 15 years to complete, and the 18th-century Slottsteater, or court theater, which is believed to be the world’s oldest theater in its original state.

1. Piazza Duomo

Piazza Duomo should be at the top of every visitor’s list. For the piazza, or square, is not only at the heart of Florence, in the city’s Historic Centre, but it is dominated by Florence’s foremost, most recognizable attraction, the Florence cathedral, or Cupola Duomo. The cupola stands 100 meters high, with its massive, red-ochre dome (41.5 meters in diameter!) visible from virtually any vantage point in the city. Built between 1418 and 1434, this was the signature piece of architect Brunelleschi. Be forewarned, though, that the lines here are long. Admission to the cathedral is 6 euros, which is well worth it, if only for the spectacular views from the top.

2. Galleria degli Uffizi

The Galleria degli Uffizi, housed in the Palazzo degli Ufizzi on Piazza della Signoria, is Florence’s largest and most famous art museum, and among Europe’s most prestigious galleries. In two galleries, the East Gallery and West Gallery, in no fewer than 45 rooms, the Uffizi houses priceless collections of works representing both the Florentine and Tuscan schools, and virtually every art movement in Italy and Europe. Again, this is a hugely popular tourist draw and can easily overwhelm the first time visitor. Museum admission: 8.50 euros per person.

3. Palazzo Vecchio

Also located in the city’s Historic Centre, Palazzo Vecchio’s claim to fame is its domineering, 14th-century military-style town hall. Designed by Amalfo di Cambio and distinguished by its 94-meter-high tower, the fortress look-alike was originally built to house the Signoria, or the highest ranks of the city government. Inside, you can view several impressive frescoes describing the history of the Medicis, the ruling family which also once occupied these quarters.

4. Galleria dell’Accademia

This is Florence’s second most visited art museum, which, most notably, is home to Michelangelo’s David, as well as six other marble sculptures by him. Among other must-sees, the museum houses a fabulous collection of works by Benozzo Gozzoli, Uccello, Botticelli and Filippino Lipi. The museum is located just off Piazza San Marco. Admission fee: 8.50 euros.

5. Piazza Repubblica

An impressive square, populated with historic cafes, notably Donnini, Gilli, Giubbe, Rosse and Pazzkowski, which during the 19th century were popular among the known artists, writers and intellectuals of the day. Today, Piazza Repubblica is a veritable tourist haunt, and a great place for an espresso and pastry. As an added bonus, the area to the south and east of the square is packed with luxury shops and restaurants, all of them housed in historic buildings.

6. Museo Nazionale del Bargello

Here is Florence’s National Museum, filled to the rafters with Renaissance sculpture and a plethora of Florentine art. Among important works here are those by Ghiberti, Donatello, Verrocchio, Amanati, Cellini and Brunelleschi, as well as Giambologna, principally his bronze Mercury. Museum admission: 4 euros.

7. Giardino di Boboli

The Boboli gardens are a showcase of Italian landscaping at its most splendid, with fountains, grottoes and scores of stunning sculptures. Chief attractions here are the Isolotto, the small island in the middle of the water garden, Buontalenti’s grotto, the 18th-century Kaffeehaus pavilion, and the life-sized amphitheater where opera was born. Admission to the gardens is 2 euros each.

8. The Oltrarno

A warren of narrow, windy, cobbled streets, crammed with Florentine antique dealers, restorers, craftsmen’s and artisans’ workshops, and funky little restaurants and trendy nightspots, this is one of Florence’s most colorful and lively neighborhoods where you can literally breathe in the Florentine culture. Now also a focal center for the city’s vibrant youth, the quarter’s principal attraction is the 15th-century Palazzo Pitti, the largest palace constructed during the Renaissance.

9. Piazzale Michelangelo

10. Ponte Vecchio

2. The Louvre

The Louvre is easily the world’s most famous art museum. It has four extensive galleries, housing hundreds of monumental works of art from the world’s greatest artists. The Richilieu Wing has the Flemish, Dutch, German and other North European masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt and Durer; Objets d’Art is bursting with French sculpture from the Middle Ages, as well as Renaissance tapestries and ancient Mesopotamian art; the Sully Wing is devoted to the French masters of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; and the Grande Galerie is home to Italian paintings from the 13th to 17th centuries, including the famous ‘Mona Lisa’. The Louvre is not cheap at 9 euros a pop, but what would a visit to Paris be without a visit to the Louvre!

3. Champs Elysees

Champs Elysees is that broad avenue in the heart of Paris that all things grand and illustrious (and even not so grand and illustrious) must travel down: the French president’s motorcade travels down the avenue; the Tour de France ends here; Bastille Day parades make their splash here. Lined with majestic trees, shops and restaurants, it runs from Place de la Concorde to the ornate, 18th-century Arc de Triomphe, tours of which are available for 7 euros each.

4. Notre Dame

Notre Dame is one of the oldest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, and a veritable tourist draw. The three-storey cathedral, with its large, stained glass medieval windows, dates from 1163 and offers in it a classic example of a Gothic cathedral facade. It has three portals: the Coronation Portal, where Mary is shown being crowned by an angel; the Portal of the Last Judgement, where Jesus is depicted as judge of the world; and the Portal of Saint Anne which leads into the cathedral. The medieval influence here is huge, from the piers and vault shafts in the interior, to the massive flying buttresses on the outside. The cathedral is located on the larger of the two islands in the Seine, Ile de la Cite, and is open daily. Oh, and this one’s a freebee.

5. Montmartre

Montmartre is that Parisian quarter that is inextricably linked with Bohemian artists, particularly those from the late 19th century, such as Renoir, Monet, Gaugin, Degas, and others, who lived and painted here at one time or another. Today, at Montmartre, you can sip ‘chocolat chaud’ at any of several garden restaurants on ‘La Butte’, have your portrait done on Place du Tertre, and also visit the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur, a gleaming white Paris landmark built between 1873 and 1914, incorporating a variety of architectural styles and periods, including Neo-Romanesque, Byzantine, Moorish and Renaissance, which offers sweeping views of the city.

6. Place Vendome

Place Vendome, or the ‘Jewelers’ Square’, is virtually synonymous with luxury shopping in Paris. It is home to the likes of Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet, Boucheron, Armani, and even Cartier which is actually on Rue de la Paix, just off the square. Window shopping is the order of the day, with the windows at Cartier the high point of any visit here. The 100-year-old Ritz, perhaps Paris’ most famous hotel, is also located here. In the vicinity, too, is Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore, which goes off Place Vendome, and which forms the heart of Paris’ legendary fashion district. Some of the world’s most famous fashion houses are to be found here, among them Chanel, Cardin, Givenchy, Versace and Hermes.

7. Musee d’Orsay

Musee d’Orsay, situated on the other side of the Seine from the Louvre, is the ‘Museum of the 19th Century’. As an art museum, it is second only to the Louvre. It has over 6,000 exhibits, covering the period between 1848 and 1914. Impressionists, in particular, are well represented here, as are all the other important art movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum, which opened to the public in 1986, is housed in the old train station, Gare d’Orsay, located in the Saint-Germain des Pres quarter of Paris. Admission here is 7 euros.

8. Le Marais

The Marais is quintessential Paris, with colorful cafes spilling onto sidewalks, surprising little boutiques, charming, albeit pricey, small hotels and bed and breakfast inns, art galleries that run the gamut, bookshops in nooks and crannies… It is a place given to strolling around, where you can enjoy cafe au lait and croissants, poke around in quaint stores, and literally breathe in Paris. The principal attraction here is Place de Vosges, which dates from 1604 and was once regarded as the most beautiful square in Paris. 9. Quartier Latin

Quartier Latin, or the Latin Quarter, is ‘the scholars’ quarter’, where the Sorbonne University, ’the intellectual cradle of Paris’, founded in the 13th century, is located. Also of interest in the quarter are the historic Place Maubert which gives visitors a glimpse of the original Paris, with its haphazard jumble of crooked houses and dark courtyards; Tour d’Argent, a 16th century restaurant; Boulevard Saint-Michel which has Roman ruins and a historic square; and Jardin des Plantes, an historic botanical garden that was originally laid out in the 17th century and where you can now stroll through ancient trees, including a cedar planted in 1734.

10. Versailles

Versailles, which lies just to the southwest of Paris, is the locale of Louis XIV’s elaborate 17th century residence, the Chateau de Versailles. Best seen on a day trip from Paris, highlights of any visit to the royal residence include the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors), a 70-meter-long hall with long rows of mirrors that reflect the light from the high windows; and the rambling park of Versailles which, divided into two by the Grand Canal, is perhaps the most perfect example of a French garden. Shah Jahan’s his own some Aurangzeb imprisoned him in the fort. He spent his last days in watching his beautiful Taj Mahal from the windows of the fort. Built mainly as a armed institution by Akbar in 1565, the Agra fort was incompletely transformed into a palace by Shah Jahan. Though the main arrangement was built by Akbar, a lot of more add-ons were completed by his grandsons. This huge fort is 2.5 kilometers. Itmad-Ud-Daulah Tomb:
Mirza Ghiyas-ud-din was a deprived merchant and lived in Persia. While on his way to India for trade, his wife gave birth to a baby girl. As the people was very poor and had nothing to eat, the parents decided to abandon the child. The baby girl bring a stroke of superior luck to her parents, for Ghiyas Beg found a convoy that immediately took him to the courtyard of the Mughal ruler, Akbar. After the change of time, Ghiyas Beg rose to turn into a minister and a trusted person in Akbar’s court. After his death in 1605, his son Jahangir becomes the emperor, who made Ghiyas Beg his chief minister. Ghiyas Beg was also privileged with the title of Itimad-ud-Daulah or the pillar of the state.

Locate at 10 km north of Agra, the tomb of Akbar lies in the middle of the huge garden. Akbar begun its creation himself but it was finished by his son, Jehangir who considerably customized the unique plans which accounts for the somewhat messy architectural appearance of the tomb. Four red sandstone’s gates direct to the tomb complex: one is Muslim, one Hindu, one christian and one is Akbar’s patent mixture. This mausoleum opens at sunrise and closes at sunset.
