Of the respondents that admitted to changing their holiday plans due to reduced finances, some 6 per cent said that they had considered booking package holidays to ensure that they were covered by ATOL provisions to get them home if their airline collapsed. For 2010 holidays, 13 per cent said that they were taking this precaution.

This is one side of the change in holiday booking habits but, conversely, another change has been in the way in which most people book their holidays. Although there may be less security when it comes to collapsed airlines, there has been a significant leap in the amount of holidays booked via small, independent operators via the Internet. Thanks to price comparison travel websites and the success story of low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair, ordinary people feel a lot more comfortable arranging the details of their  holidays themselves and creating a tailor-made experience online.

People have also become far shrewder when it comes to bargain-hunting. In the 2009 Thomson and First Choice annual trends report, some 46 per cent of respondents admitted that they would be taking advantage of hotels’ worries about the economy to obtain five-star rooms at three or four-star prices. Others have sought out the most favourable exchange rates, forsaking the Eurozone for countries such as Turkey, which is fast becoming the medium-haul destination of choice thanks to the strong position of sterling compared to the Turkish lira.

3) Welcome basket on arrival.

A lot of self catered holiday companies arrange for a small welcome pack to great you. This is usual a token selection of cleaning essentials, a bottle of wine and perhaps a little bit of snack food like croissants. However, don’t underestimate how tired and thirsty you can be after a long journey and having a few things to eat drink on arrival can really make the world of difference.

4) Pre arrival supermarket shop.

Some companies will go shopping on your behalf – you email them a list and they arrange it for you. If your holiday company won’t do this, check with the local supermarket. Some (like Sherpa) will offer free delivery on food shops over a certain value.

5) Ad hoc catering arrangements.

Many ski resorts now have companies who offer an ad hoc external catering service – from take away curries or pizzas to four course dinners prepared in your chalet, served and then tidied away. This means that self catered holidays can also benefit from a touch of catered luxury. Having the flexibility to mix self cooked meals with eating out, and in house catering is a great way of sampling the local produce and cuisine.

With the Christmas Break and New Year nearly upon us the busy holiday booking period of January and February for Easter and summer holiday breaks is just around the corner. Last year the end of January and February were very busy for bookings and some of our customers were amazed by how many cottages had already been booked for Easter and all of the summer peak holiday weeks. Europe’s favourite TV soap and the world’s longest running drama, Coronation Street, has boosted interest in the island of Malta, according to a UK based Malta holidays guide.

Aired in the summer, the soap ran a storyline of two of Coronation Street’s characters taking a last minute holiday to the island. The episodes featured Eileen, played by Sue Cleaver and Steve, played by Simon Gregson initially in the capital Valletta, before heading to a hotel by the Mediterranean.

Their arrival on Malta starts ominously as the island’s hotels are fully booked, but Steve manages to get a shared room after visiting the tourist office.

The number of visitors to the travel guide’s internet site more than doubled on the evenings immediately after the episodes featuring Malta were screened compared to normal, and the overall impact is still bringing benefits.

‘Even on the days between the programmes being aired we were seeing a much higher volume of visitors than we normally get’, they say, ‘while we don’t expect dramatically increased visitor numbers for much longer, overall Coronation Street featuring Malta will be enough for many millions of viewers in the UK to consider Malta as a holiday destination in the future, and the power of Coronation Street’s appeal will outlast any tourist board television campaign because it’s independent, and they portrayed Malta in a positive light.’
